3 Surefire Ways to Get Focused on What Matters Most

Is it hard for you to get or stay focused?

Have you ever had a thought about a bill or a call you need to make while praying? How about checking your social media updates back to back to back when you know you have work to do?

Focus, lol.

Have you ever done either?

Do you find it hard to organize your thoughts or maybe there’s always something new vying for your attention that seems better than whatever you were previously focused on?

In this noisy, easy access world, it can be hard to get and stay focused, which means many of us aren’t able to be present or complete tasks efficiently.

Would you like to turn down the noise in your mind and narrow the list of distractions in your life, so you can turn up the dial on your ability to get focused and get after what truly matters?

The other day, I posted this reminder as apart of a larger message on Instagram:

“The world wants you to expend yourself. God wants you to expand yourself.”

The word expend means to exhaust, deplete or to use up. Where as, the word expand means to grow, unfold or to increase overtime.

The world’s billboard is constantly advertising DO MORE or if you don’t have THIS, then you’re not truly a success?! Another way put, the world wants you to internalize this message: You as you are is not enough.

The lure to chase who or what you “think” you don’t have is real. It can cause you to be anxious and unnecessarily insecure about the smallest things. When your mind is in a worried state, it takes away from your ability to get or stay focused on what matters most.

On the other hand, God’s universal messaging, though not overt like the world, is trying to get you to believe in something significantly bigger. God wants you to receive this message: You matter. You’re enough. You’re needed.

Despite what you think about yourself, you were created with intention to be a major contributor to this life, not a bystander.

Let’s be clear!

Major by God’s standards is more about obedience (1 Samuel 15:22). It’s about exploring who you are and the unique ways your gifts and talents can be expressed. To build with God, and to build up others. It’s called having a sense of purpose, and let’s face it, it pays in overall wellness when your actions are linked to purpose. Click here to read this article on the positive relationship between purpose and health.

Now, major by the world’s standards is about expending your energy to garner big numbers. Mostly, via your bank account, social media, or anyway PEOPLE can see how great you are.

Look, I like living in the world! But, the world’s prosperity cannot compare to God’s peace. And, where there’s peace, there’s an ability to see, there’s an ability to get and stay focused on what matters most.

Here are 3 surefire ways to get focused, so you can have major impact in this noisy world:

I kinda gave away point #1! Decide whose messaging you plan to follow: the world’s or God’s? This will help you free up some space in your life. Philippians 4:8 can help you determine what’s worth your effort and time…

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.” NIV

If it doesn’t expand you or build others up, don’t feed it your focus!

Point #2. Do the heart and soul work necessary to know your mission, assignment or why (as Simon Sinek calls it). Pray. Hire a coach! Set aside time to reflect on who you are and the gifts you’ve been given and how your gifts can be used.

Do not waste time dwelling on what you think you’re missing or lacking, instead #GetEngaged with what you have and work it!

Point #3. Don’t be double minded! The ability to take hold of your assignment, mission or why and remain focused is definitely a battle of the mind. However, the war begins in your heart.

Your heart has to accept the mission. Once your heart says, “This is it. This is what I’m meant to do and I ACCEPT the challenge!” –your heart communicates to your mind “let’s do this” and eventually the actions towards your mission, assignment or why begin to show out in your life. That’s why in Proverbs 4:23, there’s a call to “guard your heart” because whatever gets in your heart has the power to direct the course of your life.

I can’t emphasize this enough: You don’t have to drift in the direction of whatever the world says is lit or popular. You can consciously choose to stand firm in the midst of the noise, to get focused on what matters most.

By doing so, you will have more impact than you ever dreamed or imagined.
