4 Habits to Help Turn Your Dreams into a Reality

You can turn your dreams into a reality!

This article is for you if you’ve finally accepted that you have a dream… a desire… and a unique calling on your life. You know what you want to do, but you’re not exactly sure how to get there. You think you’ve been working on turning your dreams into a reality, but you’re not seeing the fruits of your labor… yet.

You have small wins, but you’re waiting (not so patiently) for the “flood gates of heaven to pour out” those blessings, right? If you’re in this season, I want to share a few tips that will help to accelerate your progress as you continue to discover the awesome journey that God has planned for you.

Habit #1- Stop Talking Start Doing

Sometimes we feel like we’re making progress when we talk about what we’re working on. “I’m writing a book”, “I’m working on my doctorate”, “I’m starting a business”. Wouldn’t it be more fulfilling to say, “I finished my book”, “I finished my doctorate”, “I have a business”? Sometimes we need others’ approval, validation, and compliments to keep us motivated as we begin to walk in our God-given purpose. Although it may feel good, learn to talk less and do more so that you don’t get caught up in feeling like you’re further along than you are.

For the next thirty days go into, what I call, “stealth mode” and stop sharing what you’re working on, what you hope will happen in the future, and what you’re looking forward to. Just work day-in and day-out on getting closer to God, walking by faith, and putting in the work that is necessary to make your dreams come true.

Habit #2- Be Happy Now for What Will Come Later

Anxiety and worry often plagues goal-diggers and high achievers. You may be good at hiding your fears and anxieties from friends and family members, but you need to get good at hiding those fears from yourself. Choose to be happy, content, and worry-free so that you enjoy the ups and downs of your journey. I’m not saying that you should have a blind “Jesus will work it out” contentment that gives you a false sense of the work that needs to be done to achieve your dreams.

We all know that He will work it out.

What I’m suggesting is that you hit the reset button on everything that you want right now. Your dreams shouldn’t become a burden. LearnSavvy.co, a site dedicated to supporting aspiring and new women entrepreneurs shares the dangers of falling into the “I will be happy when…” trap in their recent article on remaining positive while striving for success. Being happy NOW is what will catapult your journey to the next level.

Habit #3- Try, Try Again

You remember the old saying, “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again”? Some of you are trying once and stopping, failing a few times and giving up, attempting something new, and then going back to your old ways. Know that God gives you the tools you need to achieve your dreams. Instead of giving you a house, God will give you tools, ply wood, sheetrock, bricks, and mortar so that you can build your own house.

Think about it.

What “tools” has God already given you? Are you using them in the right way? Are you continually using your hammer, when you need a bulldozer? Get it? If you feel stuck right now, chances are, you need to change the set of “tools” that you’re using to tackle the problem. Maybe a few years ago, a certain set of (spiritual) tools worked for you. In this new season, you may need to go back to your (spiritual) tool box and dust off something that you haven’t used in a while. Be willing to try new strategies and tactics to unlock what God has for you.

Habit #4- Consider the Nightmare

Every once in a while, you need to remind yourself of what life would be like if you don’t achieve your dreams. I call that, “considering the nightmare”. What a tragedy it would be if you never got the chance to fully realize God’s full blessings for your life?

I want you to find an index card and write down who you would be letting down if you didn’t pursue a life dedicated to God’s purpose. Write down how you would feel. Write down the opportunities you would miss out on if you weren’t able to make your dreams a reality. Now, tuck that index card deep in your wallet. Every time you have a setback. Every time you fail miserably. Every time you think about giving up, pull it out and remind yourself that the journey to accomplishing your dreams is far easier than the reality of the opposed nightmare. Let that fuel you. Let that remind you that through Christ all things are possible.
