Teens Struggle to Choose Faith Over Fear Too

My name is Zybrea Knight aka ZyMone’t and I struggle to choose Faith over Fear!

When I think of faith and fear, I think of a battle between Faith vs. Fear. And, I believe you have to pick a side. Will you choose Faith or Fear? Almost like Life or Death. The choice is yours.

As youth, we often worry about how I am going to look? Will what I want to say come out the right or wrong way? Will I be able to translate all the thoughts I have going on in my mind? OR Will I keep them all bottled up inside.? Fear of being judged or misunderstood, talked about and mistreated, not fitting in, the normal pressures of society.

All of these thoughts were mine, living in fear.

I am a 16-year-old Christian who is taught to have faith in every situation. Although, I have been taught to have faith, I have struggled with exercising my faith because I would allow fear to get in my way.

In Hebrews 11:1, it tells us what faith is:

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen.”

It is significant to recognize what is meant by the word “hope” in this scripture. It’s not the “Oh, I hope it is going to be nice out today” kind of hope. This is a different, more extreme kind of hope that which cannot be separated from faith. A mentor of mine once told me, “Without hope, what is Faith? Fear is the complete opposite of faith. It is a denial of the hope that God will take care of us no matter what trials we come up against.”

There was a time when I was asked to dance solo for my mother who was an honorary at my church’s women’s service. I said yes, and it felt like seconds after I gave my answer, I started sweating and over-thinking. I became scared! I went through a week of rehearsal and was petrified of how it would turn out. I had become so used to doing the ballet, jazz and tap, I wasn’t sure how to present a praise dance, especially one that was going to be good for my mother; who is the head of the praise dance ministry. I felt crazy pressure. I didn’t want to make one single mistake. I called my aunt and asked her if she could help me and she told me to pray.

I prayed and asked God to help me not be scared, but to help me minister through dance. If you need help with knowing what to say as you pray, check out this post, 7 Prayers That Will Change Your Life Forever.

The day came and it was time for me to do the dance for my mom, I was a bit shaky and I heard a little voice in my head say:

“For God gave us a spirit, not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

From that point on I felt God was with me throughout it all. By growing in our faith, fear will find it more difficult to get ahold of us. Even when it seems impossible, you can choose faith over fear.

Each time you are afraid or faced with adversity, use that time as an opportunity to grow in your faith. Keeping in mind that even though it may not seem like it at the time, God will never send a difficulty your way that is too big for you to handle with His help.

Corinthians 10:13 says…

“No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.”

Whether your fear be of something as little as a bug or as large as speaking in front of an audience or being in a relationship, always remember that fear is conquered by faith. Which will you choose?

Let’s not end this here. Comment below on how easy or difficult it’s been for you to choose faith over fear.

This was amazing and thought provoking! The topics faith over fear is one that we all struggle with at different stages in our lives. When our flesh says be scared God’s word reminds us, in the extremely appropriate stated scriptures, what did I give you? If we have His spirit on the inside we have power love and self control! He gave us power to be conquerors and I’m so glad my niece reminded me of that this morning!! Love this, keep more coming!

It’s quite similar to the mind over matter.. Fear is all in our head, Don’t give in to fear! With having Faith and Trusting God all things are possible! We are more than conquerors!

Very insightful and a testament to your love of the Lord. What I have learned is the Word will give you all the answers and understanding you need. By staying diligent in the Word, you gain strength and the ability to see when the devil is trying to attack you or place the spirit of fear inside you. But God! If you stay fed by the scripture and rooted in prayer He will continue to give you wisdoms, understanding, and the strength to be faithful to His word!

This was awesome! Very well written and thought out. Most importantly it was bold and courageous. Many Christian teens are not in this mind set at age 16, as a matter of fact some adults don’t either, your faith was shown simply by just writing this blog. You’ve have now opened a platform for other Christian teens and adults to choose Faith over Fear! Very proud of you niece! Great Job????????

Such a great topic that can be applied to anyone at any age; But so important for other young people to see the perspective of their peer. As a mother raising a Teenage daughter, I often wonder what challenges she may face and what I can do to help her through. I speak to her about allowing God to use her, and her gifts for his glory. She recently faced something that I now realize was a fear for her. I’m not sure if she has quite overcome it, so I’ve already been blessed by this and now have scriptures to give my daughter related to Faith over Fear. I’m also excited to see that there’s a platform for her as a Christian Teen.
*Very proud of this young lady, and look forward to seeing more!

Encouraging! Inspiring! Empowering! I believe that FEAR cripples people, specifically the body of Christ, more than anything. This is an awesome testimony of God’s overcoming power. Touches my heart even more to see this victory in the lives of our young people!! Keep yielding your gifts to God and He will take you further than you ever imagined!!
