My name is Zybrea Knight aka ZyMone’t and I struggle to choose Faith over Fear!
When I think of faith and fear, I think of a battle between Faith vs. Fear. And, I believe you have to pick a side. Will you choose Faith or Fear? Almost like Life or Death. The choice is yours.
As youth, we often worry about how I am going to look? Will what I want to say come out the right or wrong way? Will I be able to translate all the thoughts I have going on in my mind? OR Will I keep them all bottled up inside.? Fear of being judged or misunderstood, talked about and mistreated, not fitting in, the normal pressures of society.
All of these thoughts were mine, living in fear.
I am a 16-year-old Christian who is taught to have faith in every situation. Although, I have been taught to have faith, I have struggled with exercising my faith because I would allow fear to get in my way.
In Hebrews 11:1, it tells us what faith is:
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen.”
It is significant to recognize what is meant by the word “hope” in this scripture. It’s not the “Oh, I hope it is going to be nice out today” kind of hope. This is a different, more extreme kind of hope that which cannot be separated from faith. A mentor of mine once told me, “Without hope, what is Faith? Fear is the complete opposite of faith. It is a denial of the hope that God will take care of us no matter what trials we come up against.”
There was a time when I was asked to dance solo for my mother who was an honorary at my church’s women’s service. I said yes, and it felt like seconds after I gave my answer, I started sweating and over-thinking. I became scared! I went through a week of rehearsal and was petrified of how it would turn out. I had become so used to doing the ballet, jazz and tap, I wasn’t sure how to present a praise dance, especially one that was going to be good for my mother; who is the head of the praise dance ministry. I felt crazy pressure. I didn’t want to make one single mistake. I called my aunt and asked her if she could help me and she told me to pray.
I prayed and asked God to help me not be scared, but to help me minister through dance. If you need help with knowing what to say as you pray, check out this post, 7 Prayers That Will Change Your Life Forever.
The day came and it was time for me to do the dance for my mom, I was a bit shaky and I heard a little voice in my head say:
“For God gave us a spirit, not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
From that point on I felt God was with me throughout it all. By growing in our faith, fear will find it more difficult to get ahold of us. Even when it seems impossible, you can choose faith over fear.
Each time you are afraid or faced with adversity, use that time as an opportunity to grow in your faith. Keeping in mind that even though it may not seem like it at the time, God will never send a difficulty your way that is too big for you to handle with His help.
Corinthians 10:13 says…
“No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.”
Whether your fear be of something as little as a bug or as large as speaking in front of an audience or being in a relationship, always remember that fear is conquered by faith. Which will you choose?
Let’s not end this here. Comment below on how easy or difficult it’s been for you to choose faith over fear.
